Foreign-trained Speech-Language Pathologists seeking to practice in Luxembourg must undergo a recognition process to validate their qualifications.

Requirements for Foreign-Trained Speech-Language Pathologists:

  1. Educational Qualifications:
    • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy, or
    • A higher education qualification equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, or
    • A certificat de capacité d’orthophoniste (master’s degree from France).
  2. Recognition of Foreign Diplomas:
    • If your diploma was obtained outside of Luxembourg, you must apply for recognition of your professional qualifications. This process involves submitting your educational credentials to the Ministry of Higher Education and Research for evaluation.
  3. Language Proficiency:
    • Demonstrate proficiency in one of Luxembourg’s administrative languages: Luxembourgish, French, or German. The minimum required level is B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Proof can be provided through:
      • Training certificates obtained in one of these languages.
      • Proof of professional experience in a French or German-speaking country.
      • If such proof is unavailable, a B2 language proficiency certificate from an approved examination center, such as the National Institute for Languages Luxembourg (Institut national des langues Luxembourg – INLL), is required.
  4. Application for License to Practice:
    • Submit an application to the Ministry of Health and Social Security (Ministère de la Santé et de la Sécurité Sociale) to obtain a license to practice. The application must include:
      • A copy of your valid identity document.
      • An extract from your criminal record (no more than 3 months old).
      • A certificate of good mental and physical health issued by a licensed doctor (no more than 3 months old).
      • A copy of your diploma and, if applicable, the official decree attesting to the recognition of your professional qualifications.
      • Proof of language proficiency.
  5. Fees:
    • A fee of EUR 75 is required for each license to practice application. This fee is payable upon submission of the application and is non-refundable, even if the application is denied or withdrawn.
  6. Processing Time:
    • The processing time for the recognition of qualifications and issuance of a license to practice can vary. Applicants are advised to ensure that all required documents are submitted accurately to avoid delays.

Additional Considerations:

  • Translations:
    • Documents not in French, German, or Luxembourgish must be accompanied by a translation produced by a sworn/certified translator.
  • Validity of License:
    • The license to practice will lapse if you do not begin practicing your profession in Luxembourg within 2 years of issuance or if you cease your professional activity in Luxembourg for more than 2 years. The license can be renewed upon request.
