When it comes to language development, all parents have questions about how to help their child, and it can be an exciting and nerve-wracking process. Is there anything you can do to help your child with their speech and language skills at home? Absolutely, and it’s in the best way possible, playing!

Looking for a toy that promotes learning and entertainment at the same time isn’t easy, especially when nearly every toy claims to be educational, but it always depends on how you are using it. Just giving a toy to a toddler, isn’t going to do anything.

Playing alongside your child, repeating core words and sounds, not only supports speech and language development, but it also helps with gross and fine motor skills, as well as creating unique memories and stronger bonds between you and your child.

Here are some recommendations. I gave some examples of toys below on Amazon. If you do click on a link, you will be taken to the Amazon website.

  • Building blocks

Whether you’ve got a set of wooden blocks or large plastic building blocks, you’ve got a great foundational toy to support your child’s speech and language development.

Blocks are great for sparking your child’s creativity and imagination. From naming colors to learning concepts like ‘high’, ‘tall’, ‘up’, ‘fall’, ‘big’, and ‘small’, there is so much that you can do with a simple set of Building Blocks.

  • Pyramid Stacking Rings

Pyramid stacking rings, similarly, to the building blocks, are providing a nice grip also for the smaller hands, and you can practice words like ‘up’, ‘down’, ‘drop’, ‘small’, ‘big’, ‘round, etc.

  • Sorting games

Sorting games are a great opportunity for using and repeating core words. From naming colors and shapes to learning concepts like ‘up’, ‘fall’, ‘big’, ‘small’, ‘in’, ‘out’, ‘push’, etc.

  • Soft Books

Simply playing with a soft book can promote the development of fine motor skills and, for example, turning the pages can help to develop things like hand-eye coordination. In addition to this, reading these books together with your little one can boost their language skills too and babies are never too young to start learning.
